July 24, 2002
19 chess enthusiasts participated in the Rexburg Mid-Summer Open held on July 20 at Adams Elementary School in Rexburg, Idaho. A big thanks to Chuck Landgraver for his work as tournament director. Channel 8 news from Idaho Falls did a story on the tournament and the Post Register also from Idaho Falls carried a story in their paper. With all the publicity, we're hoping for an even larger turnout for our October tournament!
John Nielson and Jim Croasmun tied for first in the open section with 3.0/4.0, and eight year old Tony Chen taking second. An interesting note: Croasmun lost to Nielson, who lost to Chen, who lost to Croasmun. It is difficult to go undefeated in a tournament!
The reserve section saw a tie between Darren Furman and Janice Chen. They each won three games but drew with each other. Cody Marcusen, Zhidon Chen, Alice Chen, and Zack Furman all tied for second. The Chen family really made their mark on the tournament.
The un-rated section also saw a tie between Stephan Fusselman and Brandon Cole, with Brian Fusselman coming in third.
Thanks for everyone who participated in the tournament!
